Texas Rejects Iran Nuclear Deal

18th May 2016 / Global

By Stephen Lendman – The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was agreed to by the five permanent Security Council member plus Germany and Iran.

It’s binding under international law. No nation may unilaterally abrogate it. Nor can any of the 50 US states.

On May 16, Texas Governor Greg Abbott wrote Obama, irresponsibly calling the deal “fundamentally flawed,” saying he’ll maintain illegal sanctions.

He called on Texas legislators to toughen them, ludicrously claiming JCPOA “undermines (US) national security,” citing no corroborating evidence. None exists.

Plenty shows Washington threatens Iranian security. More Big Lies followed.

Abbott: “Expecting Iran to actually adhere to the deal is…foolhardy.”

False! Tehran scrupulously continues observing all agreement provisions since Security Council members unanimously approved Resolution 2231 last July. No evidence suggests otherwise.

Abbott: “The Iranian regime has consistently and blatantly flouted the terms of previous international agreements, and indeed, on multiple occasions since the Iran deal was finalized, it has conducted long-range ballistic missile tests in defiance of existing UN resolutions.

False! Abbott cited no evidence proving his claims because none exists. Iran’s word is its bond. America can’t be trusted.

Tehran’s short, intermediate and ballistic missile programs violate no international laws or treaty provisions. JCPOA only prohibits Iranian missile development able to carry nuclear weapons. Its nuclear program is peaceful with no military component or intention to have one.

It steadfastly supports a nuclear-free region and world, the only way to save humanity from the scourge of these weapons.

The Texas Prohibition on Investment in Iran Act bans state pension and retirement funds from investing in Iran or entities doing business with the Islamic Republic.

Abbott wants legislation banning local government entities from similar activities. Mindless of his international law obligations, he intends going his own way.

Iran so far got little in return for greatly compromising its legitimate nuclear program. Much of its assets remain frozen.

US pressure makes companies reluctant to do normalize business ties. New US illegal sanctions were imposed since JCPOA came into force. Iran is denied access to US dollar transactions.

The Supreme Court ordered $2 billion in frozen Iranian assets disbursed to US families of victims killed in the 1983 Beirut Marine Corps barracks attack – a Mossad false flag Tehran had nothing to do with.

A lower court ordered Iran to pay $10 billion to families of 9/11 victims – a likely joint CIA/Mossad false flag.

Suggesting Iranian involvement in both incidents shows what the Islamic Republic is up against. No regional nation is more committed to peace and stability. None along with Palestine more egregiously harmed longterm.
