UK fuel pump prices over time

22nd September 2019 / NewsBits

In January 2000, the price of petrol and diesel had reached all-time highs and led to the Fuel protests, with three occurring since – hence the reason why petrol and diesel prices have remained stable without further taxes being imposed by government.

The Highest price in Britain in 2000 – The South East has recorded the highest price for unleaded at 129.8 p/litre. Northern Ireland has recorded the lowest price for unleaded at 126.7 p/litre.

The chart below tracks the weekly changes in petrol and diesel prices over time (a rolling ten-year period) and is based on BEIS data published each Tuesday. The graph shows that petrol reached a record high of 142.2ppl in April 2012. In the same month, diesel hit a record high of 148ppl.

The current average price is £1.26 per litre for unleaded and £1.31 per litre for diesel – almost identical to that of nearly 20 years ago.  The political crisis in France sparked by the ‘Yellow Vests’ movement was sparked by rising fuel prices in October 2018 that still rages on every weekend.
