Johnson 'bottles it' with Russian sanctions

Boris Johnson has announced sanctions against five Russian banks and three billionaires after Russia ordered troops into two regions in eastern Ukraine.

The PM said Russia’s actions amounted to a “renewed invasion.”

He added that the “first barrage” of sanctions would be extended if the situation escalated further.

The EU and US have also imposed sanctions. Germany has cancelled the 8.2 billion euro Nord-Stream2 pipeline.

In his statement to MPs, Johnson said the UK would be targeting Russian banks Rossiya, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank and the Black Sea Bank.

The three individuals hit by sanctions are Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rotenberg, and Igor Rotenberg, he added.

They would have their UK assets frozen and be prevented from travelling to the UK.

Frankly, this represents a climb-down by Boris Johnson and a win for Putin as it does not go anywhere near where it should. It only goes to show just how much money, assets and influence Russians have in the UK (quite possibly within the Tory party as well).

Withdrawing ‘golden visas’ to Russian families, sending them back to Russia and freezing all of their assets would have an effect on Putin himself. And there is a good reason why Britain and its allies should react with full strength straight away against the Kremlin – because this situation is only going to get worse.

Influential Baltic military leaders are predicting that this initial invasion into Ukraine is just the start. Here’s just one comment that was reposted by one of Britain’s foremost political pollsters/forecasters – “Economic sanctions, no matter how crippling, will not work. We must now recognise that the defeat of Ukraine must be prevented by all means possible. The war is coming to us, whatever we do, so far better that the Russian forces are defeated in Donetsk than Dresden or Dover. The Russian naval exercise off Ireland is to cut the subsea communications cables, an attack that could cost trillions. Kremlin planning includes this, and this is NOT about just Ukraine.

I have not slept well. We are very scared but determined. My friends in the Militia are expecting call ups and if it comes to it, the Baltic will fight to defend themselves, together with the NATO allies based here.

Crimea in 2014 was the beginning and this is nowhere near finished.
