Fitness Industry: Clubs, Instructors and Members
There are roughly 6,700 thousand health and fitness clubs in the United Kingdom with approximately 9.7 million members. Only Germany has more health and fitness club members in Europe. Of those clubs, close to half are solely fitness clubs, generating a total annual turnover of 1.9 million British pounds. The majority of fitness clubs generates a turnover between £100,000 and £250,000.
There are roughly 189,000 people in the United Kingdom with an occupation in the sports and fitness sector, of which 62,000 are fitness instructors, of which 16,000 are full-time employed.
In England, around 8.9 million people take part in fitness activities for at least 150 minutes per week, of which women are slightly more active than men.
In Wales, roughly 16 per cent of people participate in gym or fitness classes at least on a monthly basis, very similar to Scotland, where it’s 15 per cent.
Including yoga into the proportion, Northern Ireland‘s population stood at 17 per cent, participating in keep-fit, aerobics or dance fitness.
