Coalition of 54 Countries Urges UN to Halt Arms Transfers to Israel
By TruePublica Editor: The pressure is mounting on the issue of arms and weapons exports to Israel as it relentlessly continues the killing of innocent civilians in its quest to finish the terrorist group Hamas and expand its military activities across the Middle East.
The UK announced that it was suspending certain weapons sales to Israel, citing concerns that these arms are being used in violation of international law in Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza. The move is more a gesture than anything meaningful and will do little to increase pressure on Israel to halt its military actions as international criticism of its war tactics grows.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the decision only affected 30 of the 350 export weapons licenses the UK had granted to Israel. These licenses include systems the UK believes present a “clear risk” of being used to “commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law.”
The Anadolu news agency reports today that – A coalition of 54 countries and organisations issued a collective appeal to the UN Security Council on Monday demanding urgent action to stop the transfer of arms and military equipment to Israel amid its war on the Gaza Strip.
“Fifty-four countries and organisations make a collective call to Members of the UN Security Council for immediate steps to be taken to halt the provision or transfer of arms, munitions and related equipment to Israel, the occupying Power,” the Palestinian mission to the UN said in a statement.
The statement further stressed the importance of adhering to international law and previous resolutions. It cited General Assembly Resolution ES-10/24, adopted on Sept. 18, 2024, which calls for restrictions on arms transfers in situations where there are “reasonable grounds to suspect that they may be used in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.”
Israel has continued a devastating offensive on Gaza, despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire.
By the 9th October, the official death toll stood at 43,300 people, mostly women and children, and over 102,260 others injured, according to local health authorities, since October 7, 2023. However, since then, the United Nations has clearly stated they had recorded seven mass casualty incidents just between 24 and 29 October 2024 in the Gaza Strip.
Thousands of children are reported missing, presumed dead beneath the rubble. Others have been harmed beyond recognition by explosives, buried in unmarked or mass graves, or gone missing in the chaos of conflict. The charity Save The Children confirms that – “Over 20,000 children estimated to be lost, disappeared, detained, buried under the rubble or in mass graves.”
