Brexit - Johnson in new challenge to Queen and constitution

Brexit has got out of all control. It is in the hands of people so right-wing that the monarchy is now considered little more than an annoying barrier to their aims. Right now, the government is now in open warfare with the monarchy, the constitution and judiciary.

The Times has reported that “Boris Johnson will dare the Queen to sack him rather than resign as prime minister in an attempt to drive through Brexit on October 31, cabinet ministers have revealed.”

In an unprecedented escalation of the constitutional crisis, senior aides said Johnson would not stand aside if his proposals were rejected by Brussels and MPs tried to unseat him to avert a no-deal Brexit.

They said Johnson was prepared to “squat” in Downing Street even if MPs declare no confidence in his government and agree to a caretaker prime minister to replace him.

Sources say MPs and peers have even discussed the idea of Commons Speaker John Bercow taking on the job, although some involved in the talks do not think he could command majority support.

In the meantime – opponents of no-deal Brexit returned to court last Friday in a bid to ‘remind Boris Johnson that he is not above the law.’ Campaigners are aiming to get a cast-iron legal guarantee that the Prime Minister cannot force the UK to crash out of the EU. Scotland’s highest court will hear arguments over whether Mr Johnson can be legally forced to extend Article 50.

What is extraordinary here is that the case has to be brought in the first place: after all they are trying to force the Prime Minister to do nothing but obey the law.

Opposition MPs suspect he will try to thwart legislation passed last month that made a no-deal Brexit illegal. The PM has hinted he will flout the new law, repeatedly declaring the UK will leave the bloc on October 31 ‘do or die.’

It was only a couple of days before that, that Government documents revealed the Prime Minister accepted he has to ask Brussels for a delay – which is in direct contradiction to what he has said in public.

There is a possibility that Boris Johnson could be imprisoned – albeit, the thought of the political elite sending one of their own down seems … unlikely.
